Swiss fashion designer Kevin Germanier has quickly risen to prominence following his spectacular showcase at the Paris Olympics. “The fashion industry often seeks a sleek presentation, but I feel more like a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein, constantly tinkering with various elements,” he expressed. His creation, the Golden Voyager costume, was a breathtaking ensemble made from recycled video tapes and adorned with numerous pearls, evoking nostalgia and creativity.

Even prior to this accolade, the 32-year-old had established a reputation for his vibrant, playful designs and exceptional skills in haute couture. Creating the costume for dancer Arthur Cadre while keeping it confidential for nine months was a defining moment in Germanier’s career. Reflecting on his recent Spring/Summer collection debut at Paris Fashion Week on September 24, he declared, “This was a monumental experience for me.”

He noted that the Olympic stage provided him with unparalleled exposure, and even weeks later, he continues to be amazed. Vogue labeled his creation “the most striking costume of the ceremony,” igniting widespread discussions on social media with its whimsical design.

Germanier’s commitment to upcycling reflects a growing trend among designers today, driven by both passion and the need for innovation. His journey began during an internship in Hong Kong, where he found damaged bags of pearls. “Upcycling isn’t just about vintage finds; it involves turning discarded materials into something spectacular,” he explained.

This ethos was cultivated during his childhood in Granges, Switzerland, where his mother and grandmother taught him to repair clothing rather than purchase new ones. Their guidance led him to enroll in Central Saint Martins, London’s leading fashion school.

During his studies, Germanier initially favored muted tones, but as he prepared for his final exam—having secured a position at Louis Vuitton—he resolved to embrace brighter hues, exclaiming, “It must be vibrant!” This pivot has become a hallmark of his aesthetic.

In the fashion world, he maintains a playful attitude: “We’re not here to tackle major global issues; we simply design dresses that shine.” His creations have caught the attention of stars like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

Despite his artistic flair, Germanier recognizes the commercial aspects of fashion. “It’s crucial to discover marketable products, whether a bag or a scarf,” he emphasized. His most popular item is a delightful baguette bag crafted from colorful pearls.

His ambitions stretch beyond just accessories; he has recently been recruited by LVMH for a “secret” project aimed at waste management. He aspires to one day lead a major fashion house like Dior, where he feels he can truly make an impact. While he cherishes the process of upcycling, he insists, “As long as I am able to create, upcycling will be part of my journey. But if it becomes less enjoyable, I will walk away.”
